What is ReinBasalt

ReinBasalt is a chopped fiber with a diameter of 13 µm, made from molten natural basalt at about 1450 °C. It combines a tensile strength of 1200 MPa and a modulus of elasticity close to that of glass with complete non-combustibility.

Basalt fiber has almost the same density as concrete. So, unlike polypropylene, it doesn’t float, and unlike steel, it doesn’t sink to the bottom. The fiber is distributed evenly through the entire thickness of the slab. The fibers are coated with an alkali-resistant sizing, which ensures bonding with the cement and protects them in the alkaline environment.

Benefits

Even through the thickness

Basalt fiber's density is close to that of concrete, so it doesn't float like polypropylene or sink like steel.

High strength and modulus

Concrete better resists cracking caused by shrinkage, temperature changes and loads.

Non-combustible

Withstands over 600 °C and does not melt in a fire.

Ready for grinding

The fibers don't pull out or make the surface fuzzy when the floor is ground and polished.

Freeze-thaw resistance

Surfaces hold up better against frost and abrasion.

Natural material

Rust-free, chemically inert, environmentally friendly.

How and where to use ReinBasalt

Where to use it

  • Industrial and polished (decorative) floors, floor toppings
  • Screeds, underfloor heating
  • Roads, outdoor paved areas, bridge and airfield pavements
  • Hydraulic and coastal structures
  • Heat-resistant concrete, furnaces, fireplaces and fire-protective structures
  • Cellular concrete, dry mixes, paving stones
Workers finishing a freshly poured curved concrete road pavement

Recommended dosage

ApplicationDosage
Screeds, paving slabs0.6–1.5 kg/m³
Industrial floors1.5–2.5 kg/m³
Roads, bridges, outdoor paved areas1.8–3 kg/m³
Dry mixes~1 kg per 100 kg of cement

The exact dosage depends on loads, thickness, concrete grade and subbase. We will match it to your project.

How to add it to concrete

  1. Add to dry components only. Never pour the fiber into water or into wet ready-mixed concrete, because it will clump.
  2. In a concrete mixer: add the sand and fiber first and mix, then the cement and crushed stone, and only at the very end the water.
  3. At the batching plant: feed the fiber onto the conveyor belt together with the aggregates and extend the mixing cycle by 45–90 s.
  4. There is no need to change the concrete mix design.
  5. Safety: wear gloves and safety glasses.

ReinBasalt FAQ

Basalt fiber or glass fiber?

ReinBasalt is designed for concrete and floors where the fiber has to perform for years and where temperature matters. ReinGlass is suited to early-age crack resistance in plasters, screeds and gypsum mixes.

Basalt fiber or polypropylene fiber?

ReinBasalt has a modulus of elasticity about 10 times higher and does not burn. Polypropylene ReinLite costs less and gives better protection against explosive spalling of concrete in a fire. The two are often combined.

Why shouldn't basalt fiber be added to water?

In water, the fine mineral fibers stick together in clumps and no longer disperse through the mix. That's why they are mixed with dry sand and crushed stone, and the water is added last.
